Update: 02/16/2010 Gunny is almost completely recovered! We are half way to our goal of helping Gunny's family with his large vet bills. Thank you so much to everyone who has donated. We still need a little help! Read below for more info.
Gunny is a 6 year old 19 pound standard dachshund. He is a Narcotics Detection Dog, a Service Dog and a Therapy Dog. You might have seen him on Animal Planet or National Geographic. These were stories about his occupation and he did not get monetary compensation for them.
On December 21st, 2009, while working, he was attacked by a 65 pound dog who was not on a leash. Gunny was not on a leash, as he was working, however he was under voice control and right next to his Mom. The dog grabbed Gunny's body and sunk in his teeth. his owner was able to pry the dog's jaws from around Gunny and rush him to the Vet. He sustained 3 shattered ribs, lacerations, torn lung sack and Lung trauma. He had to be kept in a oxygen cage for in the critical care unit for 18 hours in order to survive. Miraculously he was able to come home on Christmas Eve, however, he is still needing long term care. He will recover but it take a few months. At this time he is still wearing the compression bandage around his ribs so that they can heal themselves. The lungs are improving each day. Follow ups will include more x-rays and blood work every couple weeks to make sure that he is healing properly.
Gunny's medical bills at this point are over $2000 but that does not include the cost of future Vet care. Because the attack was on public grounds and both dogs were off lead, his owner, by area laws, cannot hold the owners of the attacking dog responsible. They could take the owners to court, however the expense of doing that is something they cannot afford on top of the Vet bills. ANY donation, even $5, will help Gunny.
If you think you can help, please send donations via Paypal to earthdogger@q.com. Even small donations can help. Any monies raised above and beyond what is needed will be donated to another dog in need or directly to Dachshund Rescue.
